Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to our first newsletter for Term 4. Term 4 is always very busy, and the end of the year will be here before we know it! A reminder that Parent Class Requests are due by Friday November 1st. The Class Placement Policy is on the school shared drive and a copy has been provided in the previous two newsletters. Once classes are set for the new year, there is little flexibility to move, due to our classes generally being full. We are using a new program called Class solver to help us with class lists. Each child will be able to name 4 friends they would like to be in a class with in 2025. Parents will be sent home a copy of your child’s choices so you can discuss with them. All students will have at least one friend with them. We like providing opportunities for our students to work with and get to know new people, as this broadens their friendship base.
Year 6 Camp
I am so proud of all our Year 6 students who challenged themselves and behaved beautifully on the Year 6 Camp. I enjoyed attending on Wednesday night playing a version of Spotlight along with Mr Knott and Mrs Smith and two camp facilitators. The teachers had great fun ‘spotting’ teams with our torchlights around the camp as they tried to find camping items in the dark and take them back to base. IF they were caught moving or not altogether, they were sent to ‘detention’ to do a variety of tasks before setting out again on their journey. I also attended on the last day where I supervised two groups participating in caving and Lost Pilot. Thank goodness I had two brave girls with me when I came across a large huntsman spider in the cave. Unfortunately, I did not conquer this fear and had to reverse out of the cave! Some brave students completed every cave, even Level 3. It was a real challenge and they succeeded. A big thank you to Mrs Smith, Mrs Davies, Miss Heath, Mr Knott, Mr Collis, Miss Lee and Mrs Ede for their hard work in making the camp such a success.

School Interschool Carnival
A massive congratulations to Mrs Kaminski and the whole Kinross Athletic team for their amazing effort last Friday. They all should be proud of their achievements. The students showed sportspersonship and supported each other throughout the day. Luckily, the rain stayed away! It was a fantastic outcome that KPS came second overall and only by 12 points did we miss first. Well done to all our interschool team and Mrs Kaminski on a job well done.
Day 4 Daniel
Today, Friday, 25 October, Kinross Primary School is recognising Day 4 Daniel. Students throughout the school will participate in lessons and activities designed to raise awareness of their personal safety. All staff and students are invited to wear red today. Please chat to your children about their safety with strangers, particularly never getting in a car with a stranger, no matter the reason. Here is a great website for parents to help discuss important safety issues with their children.

World Singing Day/Special Choir Performance
World Singing Day is a global sing-along held annually on the 3rd Saturday in October. As a catalyst for positive human connection, this one day each year serves as an opportunity to celebrate our global family through the international language of music.
Founded in 2012 by Colorado (USA) musician Scott Johnson, World Singing Day brings people together in their communities all around the world through the simple act of singing together.
World Singing Day is not religious or political, and encourages people to put aside their differences and celebrate what we all share as human beings. World Singing Day is for everyone, regardless of your race, colour, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, singing ability, and age.
On Monday, our Kinross Choir joined the Circle of Friends Choir to provide an entertaining concert for our school community. Residents from Amana Living came along to watch the performances also. It was a beautiful afternoon watching our students perform songs from the One Big Voice Concert. It was lovely to see the two choirs combine joining in together to show a love for singing, young and older! A big thank you to Mrs Brierley and Margaret for making this event happen.
School Open Afternoon
It was fantastic to see so many parents visit the school last Wednesday for the school open afternoon. The students were very proud showing off their classrooms and the work they have been doing throughout the year. I would like to thank you all for making the time to visit. We had between 80-90% of parents visit in every classroom. We are lucky to have such a supportive community at KPS.
I will be absent from school until Monday, November 4th. Mrs Brioney Smith will be Acting Principal. Unfortunately, my husband’s mother is very ill and I will be spending time with the family to support her at this difficult time.
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind regards,
Therese Gorton
Principal
Year 6 Camp
During Week 1, our Year 6 students had an amazing time at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp. Here, they took part in activities such as surf lifesaving, caving, archery, orienteering and the BIG SWING! Students all challenged themselves by facing their fears (with an obvious lack of sleep for some!) and working with a group of students they may not have had the chance to before. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all staff who gave up their time to allow our students this experience and to our students for being incredibly organised and well-behaved. Please enjoy some photos from Camp 2024!

Reading
With all of the extra-curricular activities available to children these days (technology being a huge factor!) sometimes the simple act of reading gets forgotten. At Kinross, we promote reading across our school in many ways; by staying on top of best-practise research and delivering high quality units of work, to offering online educational programs and reading support for those who may require extra assistance and encouraging a love of reading through celebrations and awards. We see proof that a student who enjoys reading and who does it regularly has success across many learning areas. We encourage all families to promote reading in the home, both as an individual endeavour and as a group activity. Speak to your child’s classroom teacher if you have any questions or would like some support in this area.

Mathletics Hall of Fame
Congratulations to the following students for reaching Platinum V in Mathletics. Platinum V status is a result of earning 1000 points in Mathletics per week for 20 weeks this year. This is an incredible achievement and students should be very proud of their efforts. The following students have recently received a certificate and a badge to wear with pride on their school uniforms.
KPS Maths Olympics 2025
I am excited to share that the KPS Maths Olympics will be held on Thursday 31st October. Tying in with the Summer Olympic Games held in Paris earlier this year, our event will be an early celebration of ‘Outdoor Classroom Day’ and a nice integration into the annual KPS Wellbeing Week. Students will be working together to earn points for an Olympic country by competing in a range of fun maths activities around the school. These games are an interesting twist on modern Olympic sports and are all designed for maximum participation and enjoyment. Year 1-3 students will complete their rotations in the morning before returning to class shortly after recess time. Following this, the senior year groups (4-6) will complete their rotations. The students will come together for an informal ‘closing ceremony’ later in the day to announce the winning country. Pre-Primary students will be participating in their own modified Olympic Games within the Early Childhood area. While sunscreen will be available, students are encouraged to apply their own sunscreen in the morning and reapply when needed later in the day. All students can have their hats and drink bottles with them during the rotations. I look forward to this fun day and in sharing the results with you in a later newsletter article. Who will be the winning country this year?
Jump Jam
On Saturday, I had the honour of attending the Jump Jam competition with Mrs Kaminski and our students from Years 3-6. It was incredible and a wonderful showcase of our talented students. The students displayed themselves with professionalism and good sportsmanship. They supported their fellow KPS students, and they had worked extremely preparing for the event.
As a result of their hard work, Kinross PS were extremely high performing and walked away with:
Year 3 girls team: 1st Place
Year 4/5 girls team: 1st Place
Year 4-6 boys team: 2nd Place
Year 6 girls team: 2 Merit awards.
Thank you to all the parents who committed to the competition by allowing their child to attend practices and bringing them on Saturday. Also, a huge thank you to Mrs Kaminski for your continued dedication to providing our students with these wonderful opportunities which they will remember long after they have left us at KPS.
Grandparents Day
To celebrate Grandparents Day, our Kindy students invited their grandparents into school for a fun-filled afternoon. The children suproised their grandparetns with a beautiful performance of ‘Catch a Falling Star’ and then they enjoyed some yummy treats and quality time. Thank you to our parents and grandparents who came along, we hope you had a lovely afternoon. Thank you to our staff for arranging such a beautiful event.
Server Upgrade
We are undergoing a server upgrade next week on Wednesday to Friday. This will have implication for us in that there will be no internet available. Our phone lines will be up and running, but as a precaution we would like to provide our school mobile phone number incase of emergency and if you cannot get through on the landline: 0436 859 516.
Lunch orders should be allowed to be placed as normal. You will be notified before Thursday if there needs to be any changes to the usual process. If you have any questions, please speak to our school officers.
Science Week – Term 3, Week 10
During the last week of term, we celebrated Science Week with a variety of activities - an incursion, daily and weekly quizzes, science competition and in-class science experiments. The theme for the week was “Species Survival: More Than Just Sustainability”.
The classes from year 1 to 6 had an incursion from Westoz Wildlife, where the students got up close with a variety of Australian animals. There was a koala, Woma Python, Stimson’s Python, Bobtail Lizard and a Sugar Glider. The students were able to pat the koala and the sugar glider, and those that were brave enough, held the Stimson’s Python either in their hands or around their neck. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience with the animals.

A weekly quiz was held for the year groups 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and 6. There were 10 questions regarding animals found in different areas around the world, that are currently endangered or extinct. Congratulations to the following winners:
Year 1/2 – Scarlet Greyling: Year 2 TA 7, Year 3/4 – Lylah Milne: Year 3 TA 9, Year 5/6 – Grace Patterson: Year 6 TA20

A sustainability competition was run to promote ways to help and care our environment, animals and plants during the students’ science lesson in weeks 8 and 9. For years 1 to 3, the students designed a poster to highlight 5 ways to care for The environment. The students in year 4 to 6, designed a t-shirt to highlight the concerns of pollution to the environment, plants and animals.
A huge thank you to the Watts Family, who donated the amazing prizes for each of our winners. Each winning student received a Scitech pass for 4 people. The winners were:
Year 1, 2 and 3: Hana Germon – Year 2 TA 7 , Year 3, 4 and 5: Pia Sjogren – Year 4 TA 16

The National Science Week Schools Theme for 2025 is 'Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature's hidden language.” We look forward to sharing the activities again next year.
Term 4 Resource Rescuers
These wonderful students have volunteered to be Resource Rescuers for Term 4. Some of their tasks include; collecting scraps for the worm farms and compost, handing out raffle tickets on Waste Free Wednesday, emptying paper tubs into the recycling skip each week and encouraging their class to bring in recycling challenge items. Thank you to these students for volunteering to be Resource Rescuers.
The current recycling challenge is plastic bread tags. The final recycling challenge for the year will be writing instruments - old pens, textas and empty wind up crayons. Thank you to all of our students who bring in items for recycling. Last term we saved thousands of plastic lids and batteries from going to landfill!
